The True Apprentice

terryTonight Sir Alan Sugar returns to our TVscreens with the new series of BBC One’s The Apprentice as 15 fresh-faced candidates go through hell and high water to avoid the  pointed finger accompanied by that now infamous phrase “You’re fired”. It’s compelling TV, as we see these sharp suited hopefuls, refelecting  those personality aspects we love and loath competing with each other to catch the eye and trust of the hard-nosed Sir Alan as he looks  for “the real deal.”  The review from the Times playlist magazine says; “The tasks remain absurd and reveal nothing bar the contestants’ sneaky attempts to abdicate responsibility and pass the buck.”Sound familar? What do you do to impress others, and how competitive are you under pressure  with targets to meet?

Unlike Sir Alan, Jesus appears to prioritise completely different qualities. He is looking for apprentices who do not need to pass any tasks to qualify for his attention. No sharp suits, marketing plans or impressive CV’s are needed- just a willingness to follow and learn. Terry Eckersley takesus through what we need to follow as apprentices of Christ in his book The True Apprentice, based on Matthew 10 v 38-42. “Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it. “ So is  the secret is less ego, more selflessness and humility and putting others first. Qualities like this may not make you top dog for Sir Alan, but they could make an eternal difference to the lives of others.
